What is Dyslexia?
Have you ever wondered why some children were unable to read despite their age?
Dyslexia is one of the most popular learning problems involving children. It means difficulty with reading. Children feel difficulty decoding words based on letters and their sounds. These conditions even prevail during adulthood if left untreated.
Dyslexia is a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. It is primarily associated with trouble in reading. However, it can also affect a child’s writing, spelling, and speaking skills.
Although many children with dyslexia are intellectually above average, dyslexia is not a sign of intelligence. A dyslexic child, however, learns differently because their ability to read fluently is constrained by issues with language development and memory.
Indicators for dyslexia
The children may face the following problems:
- Difficulty to understand how letters make sounds and how letter combinations make words.
- Poor comprehension skills and struggle to hold the information even for a short period of time and recall it in a sequence.
- Reversals and mirror imaging (b for d or p for q) of letters and words
- Skipping difficult words or adding another word starting with the same letter which is not in the line while reading.
Steps to be taken
Consult a psychologist or an Educational Therapist as soon as you notice these symptoms in your child.
